Vice Ganda Ad Lib Makes Denise Laurel Trend on Twitter

For a while yesterday afternoon, the character string ‘Denise Laurel’ was among the top trends on Twitter. For the benefit of those who have yet to venture into the social media site, Twitter lists the ten most mentioned strings of characters at a given period of time. These are called trends.

Denise Laurel, the actress who stars in the early evening series ‘Annaliza,’ herself owns a Twitter account with more than 800 thousand followers. Had she seen the trend, she must have been not only surprised but also utterly clueless as to why her name was trending.

After all, at the time she had not done or was involved in anything that would have even merited the trend.

The culprit, as those who watched the finals of ‘That’s My Tomboy’ on ‘It’s Showtime’ know, was none other than Vice Ganda. The comedian has more than 3.5 million followers on Twitter; and causes topics to trend not only locally but worldwide from time to time.

The cause of the Denise Laurel trend was a simple but inspired ad lib that tickled viewers enough to express their delight on Twitter. It was also another demonstration of wit the sort of which few comedians in this country can match Vice Ganda for.

What is so amazing about the Denise Laurel trend is that it was so totally unintended and must have happened because of spontaneous delight expressed by Netizens on yet another brilliant piece of invention by Vice Ganda.
The lesbian pageant was down to its last five contestants and each was being interviewed in the question-and-answer portion.

As Vice himself said, he loved the question-and-answer because he could play around with the contestants. Sometimes, he could get tiresome; but it did help to relax the contestants for when they had to deliver their responses.

With the contestant Phao Faraon, Vice pretended to read from an envelope. Vice initially declared this question as one of the category ‘Current Events.’

Even that snippet of humour had co-host Billy Crawford almost breaking out in laughter as there was really only one question for all the contestants.

“Sa palagay mo,” Vice went on dramatically, “kung iimbitahan ka [pause] pupunta ka ba [pause] sa condo ni Denise… [long pause]”

Laughter was immediately audible in the background from the live audience.

Given that the Vhong Navarro case had been front page material for the past week, everyone thought that the name being mentioned was ‘Deniece’ and that this was going to be a cloaked swipe at the model Deniece Cornejo for her role in the Navarro mauling.

But Vice immediately segue-ed to something totally unexpected. “Laurel…?”

Billy Crawford joined in, “Hindรฎ pa pala tapos madlang people, kayo naman!”

“Denise Laurel, ‘yung artista!” Vice went on. Then, as an afterthought, added naughtily, “Wrong spelling wrong!”

Finally he stated the complete question, which was always a farce to begin with, “Kung iimbitahan ka, pupunta ka ba sa condo ni Denise Laurel [pause] para manuod ng ‘Annaliza’? [pause] Anong mga dadalhin mong foods?”

Faraon gamely replied, “Finger foods!” Even that reply was lost in the hilarity of the moment.

I had forgotten all about that incident and went on to watch the UAAP volleyball games. When I sneaked a look at Twitter during a commercial break, I saw ‘Denise Laurel’ among the trending topics and instantly recognised the connection to ‘Showtime.’

For something to trend on twitter, you need thousands upon thousands of people all collectively expressing thoughts about the same thing. It is not easy to make something trend at all.

Vice Ganda, with his multitudes of followers, has deliberately made topics trend worldwide before, as with his #PleaseHelpthePhilippines in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda and #PrayforVhongNavarro after the mauling incident.

What is so amazing about the Denise Laurel trend is that it was so totally unintended and must have happened because of spontaneous delight expressed by Netizens on yet another brilliant piece of invention by Vice Ganda.
