EPL Top Four Remaining Fixtures

The 2013-14 season of the English Premier League heads into the homestretch with the top four teams all well-poised to claim the championship come the end of the season in May. This has been, from start to finish, one of the closest EPL seasons ever.

As of this writing, Chelsea are in pole position with 69 points from 31 games along with the comforting knowledge that most teams top of the table by the first of March had gone on to win the championship.

Liverpool are breathing down Chelsea’s neck, four points behind with a game in hand. Moreover, Liverpool entertain not only Chelsea but another top four contender in Manchester City at Anfield, where the Merseyside club had lost only once this season and had won all but two of their EPL matches.

Big-spending Manchester City are three points behind Liverpool, but crucially with three games in hand over leaders Chelsea. If Manchester City win all their games in hand, they take over the EPL leadership. It goes without saying, though, that these games in hand are all potential points, in contrast to both Chelsea and Liverpool having played theirs and claimed the points.

Manchester City’s late ten matches are 5-5 in terms in home-and-away fixtures. Two of these are away matches against top four contenders Arsenal and Liverpool along with away matches against cross city rival and seventh placed Manchester United as well as sixth placed Everton.
Currently fourth after having lead for most of the season are Arsenal, who appear to be imploding after that horrendous show over the weekend at the Bridge. The Gooners have 62 points from 30 matches, but should find comfort in knowing that five of their remaining eight matches are all at home at the Emirates.

Liverpool also play five of their last eight matches at home, having won 37 of the available 42 points in contrast to Arsenal’s 33.

Chelsea play four of their remaining seven fixtures away; but crucially, only the away match at Anfield is against the current top eight. That said, Chelsea had tended to play better against the top teams this season when its bloopers had come against supposed lesser teams.
